Nepal, Qatar officials discussing labour migration reforms in Kathmandu
Officials of Nepal and Qatar have launched a joint technical committee meeting in Kathmandu on Friday to discuss issues related to labour migration reforms for Nepalis working in Qatar.
Binu Bajracharya Kunwar, a joint secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, is leading the Nepali delegation whereas Qatar’s Labour Ministry’s undersecretary Mohammed Al Obaidly is leading the Qatari side.
Sources in the Labour and Employment Ministry say they have finalised a seven-point agenda for the meeting. In particular, the two sides will discuss revising a labour agreement they signed in 2005.
Nepal is demanding that Qatar provide employment to Nepali domestic and agricultural workers, extend the Qatar Visa Centre in Kathmandu into provinces and introduce some initiatives to minimise the Covid-19 impact on labour migration.
In addition, Nepal will also demand that Qatar support the country in the reintegration of returning migrant workers into society.
Qatar is one of the most popular labour destinations among Nepali migrant workers.
